"YIHAA" FROM THE METAL OBSERVER!

8,5 / 10 by THE METAL OBSERVER

So this is my first encounter with the Country unto Stoner Rock Swedish collective known as THE MATADORS. Apparantly “Flame The Whisper” is their sophomore effort and their first album was reissued when this album came out, so that’s that. Anyway what we, the listeners, are treated to on this album is sixteen tracks of extremely catchy-danceable-poppy-fun music with equally poppy-catchy-fun lyrics. If you are a fan of THE QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE or MONSTER MAGNET (“Dopes To Infinity” and beyond) you’ll really dig this because I, Sam, am a fan of said bands (more so MONSTER MAGNET) and I find myself liking THE MATADORS a good amount.

Judging by the song titles and lyrical content one can come to the conclusion that THE MATADORS have a humorous edge and that one would be correct. The subject matter is standard sex drugs and/or rock’n’roll and the lyrics reflect the lighter side of substance abuse and sexual excess….you read that right. However the music is serious enough where THE MATADORS can be taken as legitimate musicians who can compose (or write…or jam…whatever) some rockin’ tunes to which one (such as you) can indeed Rock Out.

“Flame The Whsiper” as a whole is surpringsly good. I found myself nodding along with each song, save a few, and was overall very pleased with this release. The highlights include “21st Century Monotony Disco”, “The Fresh”, “Like A Matador” and “Just Like Lucy Said”. All of these songs are seriously Rocked Out and incorporate melodies and acoustics and are just awesome. There are a few buzzkills, such as “Tango De La Muerte” which is unnecessarily boring and monotonous or even the title track which is just guitar work, along with “The Fresh”. But the hit to miss ratio is very high and THE MATADORS scored with “Flame The Whsiper” and created sng great rock songs.

Is it metal? Well no, but it’s great Stoner Rock that really gets the old noggin boppin’, yes I just said noggin boppin’, and overall just makes you feel good. A party record or a road trip record, “Flame The Whisper” was made for those two activities. However it’s enough manly rock to satisfy any open minded rocker’s taste for fun. Not mind blowing, but damn good.

Momentami panowie wpadają w nieco monotonne rytmy, ale koniec końców takie numery, jak 'The Fresh', 'The Luscious Cabaret' czy pokręcony, mroczny 'Just Like Lucy Said' znakomicie podgrzewają atmosferę post-rockowej sjesty.

Dobre!

When all is said and done, it isn’t the rock formula that makes bands interesting, it’s the band, and Matadors have unique and creative tattooed all over them.

Matadors = Hives + Tango + Country + Queens of the Stone Age
Garage, Stoner, something else weird from Sweden, however you want to classify it Matadors have a sound all their own. The tango infused melodies and beats add something to a genre that is usually by the numbers. Frontman Andreas Bergrstrom’s vocals are thick and much lower than his usually unwieldy counterparts in the garage genre, and it’s a welcome addition. Although the songs don’t all pop, there is enough substance to warrant repeat listens, and the more rocking numbers (“21st Century Monotony Disco” “New Wave Coke”) are killer. Portions of the disc meander, plus any album over 12 songs needs to be 100% solid all the way through. Unfortunately, some of Flame the Whisper should have been left on the cutting room floor. When all is said and done, it isn’t the rock formula that makes bands interesting, it’s the band, and Matadors have unique and creative tattooed all over them. –Peter Fryer

ALLMUSIC.COM DIGGIN´ DEEP! "...And with Flame the Whisper it's official — Matadors are a group to keep an eye on."

Review by Greg Prato

When you think of "stoner rock," an image of a bunch of hairy biker dudes jamming away on Gibson SGs usually immediately comes to mind. But there's a new breed of stoner bands favoring succinct songs and robotic sounds (à la vintage Can) over indulgent jamming — including three chaps who hail from Stockholm, Sweden, and go by the name Matadors. And for the most part, this is the approach that the trio embraces on its 2007 release, Flame the Whisper. "Robot rock" is the name of the game on such as amusingly titled ditties as the album opening "21st Century Monotony Disco" and "New Wave Coke."

But Matadors aren't merely one-dimensional, as they also incorporate a bit of country twang on "The Duel," and you can guess what style of music they digest and spit out on "Tango de la Muerte."

It's always nice to discover a rock band more interested in coming up with its own style and approach, rather than merely being content trying to obtain "one-hit wonder" status. And with Flame the Whisper it's official — Matadors are a group to keep an eye on.

7/10 IN SWEDEN´S ZERO MAGAZINE!!!

EXCLAIM THE GLORY!

THIS GLORY COMES FROM EXCLAIM, CANADA!

Matadors
Flame The Whisper
By Keith Carman

Vastly different than the Canadian psychobilly mongers of the same name, this Swedish quartet delve into territory we’d expect from the land of higher taxes and beautiful blonde people: good old rock’n’roll. Fucking with the standard formula though, Matadors punctuate the otherwise straightforward rock with twists of country and punk that feel familiar yet fresh. Flame The Whisper is heavier than a retread of Social Distortion but cuts the twang and grit before going too far to create an air of casual, laidback moderateness. It also alludes to influences from fellow clansmen the Hellacopters and Norwegians Gluecifer, again without the high-octane thrust those bands are renowned for. In this case it’s unique yet tasteful, more of a slow-burning support for punk rock’n’roll’s heated passion than a full-blown, overbearing, chaotic assault. (Devil Doll)

MATADORS RECIEVE GREAT REVIEW FROM LEGENDARY STONERROCK.COM

YES HERE IS THE GREAT REVIEW FROM LEGENDARY STONERROCK.COM! CHA CHA CHA:-)

The Matadors - Flame the Whisper
Review by John Pegoraro (StonerRock.com)
Devil Doll Records
Release date: 2007

The last album from The Matadors, The Muse of Senor Ray, was another one of those albums that just was. Good for what it was, but not really memorable enough to warrant telling your friends about.

At a patience enduring (for this critic at least) 16 tracks, Flame the Whisper's hedging its bets that at least half of the songs are gonna stick. And to the band's credit, that's the case. The band's taking the tried 'n' true Swedish stoner sound and countrifying it, making them a sort of Queens of the Stone Age wearing ten gallon hats and dusty boots with spurs. If it sounds like I'm being overly hard on the band, I'm not. It's a style that works well. The songs are punchy as hell and they occasionally approach the same sort of technical finesse that Dexter Jones' Circus Orchestra has (especially "The Luscious Cabaret" and "Ode to L&G").

When they get too involved in their self created mythology (lots of references to their own bad selves on Flame the Whisper) or when they let the "cha cha cha" mariachi moments take center stage, I'd rather just extinguish the whisper. Overall, though, this is a marked improvement for the band and worth checking out.

"Flame the Whisper" is a charming, hot and moist rock 'n' roll-dream with a song
buffet that covers a spectrum of alternatives that can be expected from hard rock,
laced with punk, tango and fuzz. How daring, unexpected, and maby even overboldly
the task may seem, MATADORS takes care of the challenge gallantly. Charm,
dynamics and provocative lyrics that easily catch sympathy beat in a sort of rock
loyalty that you could find in the nineties' stubborn METALLICA vs. GUNS 'N' ROSES-mania
when fans displayed which side they had chosen in the trench.

In the commencing song '21st Century Monotony Disco' we climb on to a raw ride filled
of energy and tempo that is easily classified as a party tune, as well as the following
song 'New Wave Coke'. Cowbells, handclaps and a pulsating bass with frontman
Andreas Bergström who dares to take his responsibility and offers a big chunk of
himself to the listeners. The singer's verbal expressions are infected with cries of
joyfulness, rhythmic whisperings and masculinity, he comprehends it – his voice is an
instrument.

When 'Down In The Dumps' begins, a smile increases form earlobe to earlobe and
my room becomes heaven on earth. The lyrics are smart and the tune one of the
many clear and obvious hits on the record together with 'Ditched On A Pile' and 'The
Luscious Cabaret'; the MATADORS theme song that is far more swinging then a hula-hoop
in full motion.

The record is golden for us freaks who go by the code "I-refuse-to-indulge-in-co-signing-
without-a-lyric-sheet", additionally a thing worth praising with all of these handclaps
and juicy tambourine contributions that causes my head and hips to spin round and
round.

"Flame the Whisper" is easily one of the coolest records I've ever heard, it is
bursting in the seams by dynamite tunes made out of hip wriggles, passion, tactful
talent and elegance!

MATADORS – "Flame The Whisper"

hitarna på skivan tillsammans med `Ditched On A Pile´ och `The Luscious Cabaret´;

elegans!

HELLRIDE LOVES FLAME THE WHISPER!

ENJOY THIS LOVING REVIEW...

Matadors – Flame the Whisper (Devil Doll Records)
By Jay Snyder
June 4, 2007

This is the second release by Sweden’s Matadors and their debut for Devil Doll Records (their first album was only re-issued by Devil Doll). I really hadn’t heard anything about these guys until I put the disc in and gave them a listen for myself. What you get here is 16 songs of danceable, country-tinged stoner rock that jams out hard and delivers catchy anthems that are in the vein of the first Queens of the Stone Age record, Mammoth Volume’s “Single Book of Songs” and the red hot Monotonix (from Israel) with other influences tastefully rounding out the mix.

You can tell that these guys take a tongue-in- cheek approach to their style as shown by the song-titles and lyrics. The good thing is that they don’t take the humorous aspects into the actual music itself as this is a fun album to put in and rock out to with good musicianship and songs that you will want to listen to again. Nothing too heavy here, just fun rock and roll played by a trio of guys that obviously love what they are doing and are incorporating some influences not always tossed into this type of music.

“21st Century Monotony Disco” kicks things off with a hard driving stoner/punk anthem that is heavier than most of the material on here and comes packing groovy riffs, strong rhythms and a deep singing style that almost reminds me of Neil Fallon in some strange way with the quirkiness of the overall delivery. It is a singing style well suited to the music and vocalist Andreas has a knack for making every verse and chorus instantly catchy and something you’ll be singing along to once you got the words in your head.

“New Wave Coke” comes next sounding like a perfect combination of the better songs of the last three QOTSA records had they kept the influences of their earlier material more prevalent instead of branching out into completely different territories.

The rest of the record bounces all over the place and with a total of 16 tracks the Matadors are able to cover a lot of ground.

“The Duel” is a quick western tinged instrumental that is appropriately titled as the desolate beats and country twang give you the mindset of two gunslingers getting ready to pull out their irons and see who the better man is. This track leads perfectly into “Ahead of my Time” which keeps the western influences in tact but polishes them up with stoner rock sensibilities that kick up a dust storm of punchy riffs and twitchy rhythms that are once again danceable and something unique for the genre.

Influences like these would come off as being far too contrived in the hands of a lesser band but the Matadors manage to deliver catchy songs while still retaining a certain amount of grit for the type of grooves they lay down.

Other highlights include the guitar twang and Mexican flavor of “Like a Matador Pt. 1” which features the album’s best chorus and lyrical hooks, the country fried stoner/pop of “The Luscious Cabaret” which has some of the coolest guitar licks on the entire album and the mini epic “Ode to L & G” which almost sounds like Witchcraft’s “Her Sister they were Weak” at times had the band added outlaw country influences to their distinct Sabbath/Tull groove on that particular track.

This is a surprising release all around. I had never heard about these guys before and this record turned out to be a damn good listen, through and through. Maybe not one for fans of strictly the really heavy stuff but for everyone else that can appreciate something not traveling the beaten path, “Flame the Whisper” is certainly worth a try.

There are a couple of tracks that slightly miss the mark but out of 16 tunes the hit to miss ratio here is a lot better than it has any right to be and even the tracks that don’t set me on fire still have redeeming qualities to them. A solid release all around and I’ll be on the lookout for their first album based on the strength of this one.

" ALL I CAN SAY IS ; WOW! "

NEW REVIW FROM BLACK ANGEL PROMOTION (CALIFORNIA)

Those filthy Swedes known to the world as The Matadors have just released their latest entitled, Flame The Whisper. All I can say is WOW! What a good timin' album, packed with energetic Neo Rock N' Roll and Punk Rock. Once again the production is tight and leaves one helluva mark on the listener, but it's really the band and their ability to blast out song after song of sticky sweet goodness that makes "Flame" such a great listen.

Sure the Twang is still in full effect but the ferocious Rock is also here and the end result is a murky, swamped up, drink til you can't see fiesta. The stand outs are "21st Century Monotony Disco", "New Wave Coke", "Down In The Dumps (Like Nobody Else)". And this doesn't begin to scratch the surface, as they're are sixteen tunes to sink your teeth into on Flame The Whisper. This band has been getting rave reviews from day one, we can't all be wrong! So get in on it while you can, cuz good music like this doesn't last forever!

"That swagger isn’t often found in rock groups these days..."

NEW REVIEW FROM SMOTHER.NET

SO MATADORS ARE NOW COOLER THAN WHITE STRIPES....

Crunchy guitars are mangled into a sort of stoner rock meets rockabilly sort of way. These guys are tougher than your average garage rock band and are destined to bring the jeans jacket back in style with their brand of daring rock ‘n’ roll and punk rock. That swagger isn’t often found in rock groups these days and while the White Stripes are busy reinventing themselves, the Matadors are creating neo-stoner rock that will get Pro-Bot fans in a frenzy. Swedish rockers the Matadors are letting everyone know that the garage rock thing is far from over.

NEW REVIEW FROM MAY 07!

THIS IS A BRAND NEW (MAY 2007) FROM DAREDEVIL RECORDS, GERMANY!
ENJOY!!!

The MATADORS are back with their robot rock’n’roll style full of groove. The band rose from the ashes of the mighty RIDGE, one of the best Stoner Rock bands from Sweden, and did the logical step away from the old Stoner Rock Ridge sound.

FLAME THE WHISPER sounds fresh, full of groove and modern. The opener 21st CENTURY MONOTONY DISCO is a smash-hit and with the right airplay and support from the label, this track will make the band rich!

TANGO DE LA MUERTE is another outstanding song on that record. THE LUSCIOUS CABARET sounds great too and SOD`S LAW is very close on the RIDGE Stoner sound. And with JUST LIKE LUCY SAID a good album with a lot of potential ends. But not every of the 16 track is outstanding, maybe 12 songs would have worked better on FLAME THE WHISPER. But in my eyes they give a fresh input to the suffering Stoner Rock scene.

This band did everything right. And now I’m not sad that RIDGE isn’t any more. MATADORS are on a good way to get a new rock sensation from the northern parts of Europe. Classic Rock influences ala Kiss, Stoner Rock and some modern Alternative Rock parts make this record unique. I don’t know any band who is comparable to Matadors.

Review from Nine Hertz, UK

Nine Hertz,UK (2006)
The Muse of Senor Ray

Remember the spate of Scandinavian fuzz rock bands that were heard in the late 90's? The Molten Universe lable (in my opinion) had the cream of the crop and among them were RIDGE. Having split up a couple of years ago, Andreas Bergstrom and Jonas Jonsson and formed a new three-piece known as the MATADORS.

There is still some of that trademark fuzz sound with a whole lot of groove but the band have developed their love of the Mexican/Spanish theme- castonettes, handclaps 'n all and opted for a 'punky-garage' production which gives the album a unique feel. Based on their background and my expectations, this album is different but in a pleasent way. Having listened to this album twenty times now, it's really grown on me. With the ever increasing stoner/punk/rock 'n' roll sound from bands like The Hives, Machinegun, Glucifer, Spoiler etc, MATADORS have found their own sound and really stand out from their contemporaries.

Opening track 'Like a Matador pt2' has a great drum and bass intro with handclaps and energetic guitar, then it crashes into tom rhythms and some galloping bass. 'I Just Tell You What You Wanna Hear' begins like an Offspring tune but Noodles never played such crunching guitars! 'Oh Well' has some punk chords mixed with a southern swagger in the chorus and some sweet cowbell and there's even a traditional Spanish sounding tune, 'Senor Ray', with some lushious slide guitar reminding me of early Queens of the Stone Age.
It's the new sound of Stoner Rock 'n' Roll so give it a whirl!
